I need a seat cover for my XS and wondered if the seat covers were the same? i.e. standard v. special etc. I got one on my watch list on ebay, but wanted to check before I got it. Thanks.

I am pretty certain the cover would be different as the seat is different. Not to sur eont he standard models, but I know the 79 Special is diff form the 80-81 Specials (those two are the same).Life is what happens while your planning everything else!

A special seat cover isn't going to look right on a standard - they go up where the standards go down, and they create a really weird looking line on the seat where it meets the rear cover. For the best job, your local auto upholsterer is the place to go.

They are definitely different. The Specials have a much larger step in them. The MNS ones are cosmetically different as well.1980 XS850SG - Sold

I bought this same cover for my XJ. I offered 40.00 and they accepted the offer. It took about an hour to install and it looks good.

Yeah. That's where I got my cover too. Perfect match to the original seat, and took about 15 minutes (plus adhesive drying time) to install.There's always these guys....

I took my seat to my local upholstery shop and she charged me $75. I looks like the same material as that one. The best part about using someone local that has 30 years experience is 1. You get a professional job and 2. You can have them make changes to the seat foam to fit your style/comfort and you dont have to mess with it! For my '79 std seat, I asked her to raise the passanger area 1" and to get rid of the aweful strap that goes across the seat and blend it in the marks it left so its oh-so-smooth. I will have a picture in a week or so.

Cool, ok seat on ebay, flat, for a standard. no rectangle pattern, all good.
On the seat pan you just unbend those "teeth" looking grippers and put the new vinyl on them and rebend back, right.?'79 XS 1100FComment

pretty much. There's also a trim piece on each side of the seat that helps provide a cleaner line, and ties the tail piece together with the tank. I've seen others dispense with the trim, but IMHO it just doesn't look right. I've also seen others who have used chromed automotive trim riveted along the bottom edge to help hold the vinyl in place. That can look pretty shabby too.I think I have a loose screw behind the handlebars.

Do the recover keeping the seat and cover warm (and pliable) in the sun, a little spritz trim adhesive on the step first, line up the seams/welting in the proper positions and then stretch the material one metal tooth at a time beginning at the back and working down each side evenly toward the front.
The metal teeth are sharp and are old and will bust off ... so be very careful with them ... I've had good success recovering ... the red one was about an 80 dollar cover from motorcycle seatcovers. com and the other was off of Ebay ... 40 buck
