  • Macho maroon? I think not!!

Hey kids, I got the paint on my new standard tank (courtesy of Andreas) done today. Here is a brief rundown.

Before: not very cafe at all

Enter new tank: I hate macho maroon

Finally, all painted up and installed: looks like a cafe bike now!

Nothing a little gold leaf and $450 in paint can't do! I am waiting on the paint to cure for the final buff, and then it is game on! I am pretty happy, this tank is ALL paint, not stickers here.

Oh, BTW, the old special tank is now for sale. Paint is 2 years old, and just has normal wear and tear. The petcocks do leak a little (not externally, they just don't shut off completely). The thermistor works properly. If anyone is interested, PM me and we can work out a deal.

Now back to look at the "improved" XS1100....

Some people will tell you that slow is good - and it may be, on some days - but I am here to tell you that fast is better. I’ve always believed this, in spite of the trouble it’s caused me. Looks good. All that's missing is the cafe seat.

That is nice! The brass sets off the gold on the tank, too.

                Hi T99,
$450? Gawd, I thought I was Mr Spendthrift for spending $100 on paint. A superb job BTW.
Before you sell the Special tank, remember that you will need it's thermistor sender to put in your Standard tank because the Standard tank's rheostat sender ain't compatible with the red light in your tach.
Also the sender mounts in the other side of the tunnel in a Standard tank so the thermistor needs to be installed with it's wires pointing forward when mounted or it'll be upside down and not give a proper reading.

                  Phil,
I know it is missing the right seat. I have kept this one to keep the bike two up, so that my wife can ride along. I am looking into buying another XS11 right now, and if it pans out, Thruxton seat here I come!

                  Fred,
Thanks for the props! The paint is actually black pearl/ copper metallic, making it about the most expensive additives you can get. I did not realize this when I ordered it, but was definitely surpised upon getting the receipt. Oh well, it now has the understated look of "money" Thanks for the tip on the thermistor, too.

                  Glad everybody likes it...

                    gas cap key

I think you can swap out the locking mechanisms between the special and standard tanks, if you haven't thought of that already. One less key on the chain and you don't have to send whoever buys the tank a key to your bike!

Looks real good. One day, when my bike drives in a straight line and doesn't make funny noises, I'll paint my bike. I already know what I want to do with it, but I need a garage so I can strip it to the frame, blast it, and get a nice cream on there, as in crimson and cream.

Actually, Andreas was kind enough to send me the matching ignition switch to this key/ cap. So it will have just one key.

Cool colors; crimson and cream should work well!

                        Awesome job Tyler,
You definitely have an eye for styling. So is the copper painted over the pearl black?Or am I not seeing something?Or are you talking about the special tank?

                          Forgot to mention....

that's only half of the bike. I'm a half breed. Half OU, half BYU, so on the other side is going to be a nice, deep blue that will compliment the crimson. I figure, most the time you only see half of the bike anyway. Probably put a cream stripe down the middle and maybe paint the fenders cream...maybe... Still not sure about putting logos on it.

I think I would put the blue on both sides, if you are going to use it, rather than one color on each side. It is odd how often you actully do see both sides, for some reason. It sounds very patriotic, though, Red, White, and Blue!

Oh, I do have the Yamaha tank badges from this tank if anyone needs some. They are not broken, but the plating is a peeling a little.
