Well it took me 3 yrs to find one - checking the ontario canada autotrader everyday. My motor is not stock - just painted all black. But I have never in person seen another one in person before or since I got mine. It attracts alot of attention & I try to ride it everyday to work. For me its the ultimate statement of a bike, done the way I like - but thats just me - Dan

              MNS Question

Talk about reviving an old thread, but I've got a couple questions about my Midnight Special, that being, were any ever produced with a Red paint job? I just got one given to me that requires an engine rebuild, and it's got a burgundy paint job with a gold and red pinstripe on the fenders, but I've never seen any online that were Red. I am sure it's a MNS, it's got the gold trim, the turbine wheels, slotted rotors, and the serial is 4W2-000079. From what I could look up, the VIN is a 81 LH, Canadian model, with the numbers matching engine. A friends dad also said that he had a red MNS as well, but could anyone shed any light on this for me?

Never heard of that, but anything is possible. I believe they all came in black with the gold accent from the factory as stock bike, but who is to say someone did not special order it like yours is painted. But I do not think it was a factory offered paint scheme.

Thanks for the info! I'm trying to figure this out as I rebuild it, because if it was originally a black bike, I was thinking of going back to the black paint job. There's a chip in the back fender and there's no black paint underneath, but the side covers with MNS on it look like there is a bit of black underneath, so I'm not sure. If it came from factory with the burgundy colour I'll leave it that way though.

Thanks, I did see that, but I wasn't 100% sure if they offered any colour options or if you could order with a custom colour. A friends dad had a MNS that he wrote off but said it came with the burgundy colour, but this is hear-say so who knows. I'll link up a picture here as I received it on the trailer, if it helps. http://cnfedyna.deviantart.com/art/xs1100lh-217088404

Everything bout that bike, with the exception of the tank and fenders, and perhaps the rear shocks, says it is an 81 MNS. The engine however should be completely painted black with some gold accent stripes and lettering, does not look to be painted black in the picture.

Anyway, that color does not look like any I have seen and I would say that in all likelyhood the tank and fenders have been repainted, or it was a custom color that the dealership had painted before delivery. I doubt it ever left the factory with that paint.

80-81, ALL MidniteSpecials were black.......NO deviations from that were produced.......

The point to a Midnight special was the black and gold "chrome" but.....I like your bike's look better. Just my thought on the subject. If that tank is in good shape and you have matching side covers why not use it....you could keep an eye out for the original black fenders on ebay or craigslist. I just got a good set for $40.
                            Good luck, great bike.

                              got one

I have an original 1981 midnight special. I bought it from my uncle ( original owner). Poor bike has been sitting for at least 18 yrs with little care. I am in the middle of trying to restore it and get it into running condition. It has 28,000kms currently.
