Fixed for now...after like the third or fourth time adjusting it when I took out the set screw, the threads came out with it, so I helicoiled it...now I will start scouring ebay for the listed cam chain tensioners, thanks gents.

My local bike wrecker has them for $50, from the XV1200.

      Ebay may still be cheaper.

By 'local' I mean 180 miles from here!)
Nice day, if it doesn't rain...

I just picked up an FJ1100 tensioner. Compared to the stock unit, it looks like the plunger goes in about 3/8" more, and about 1/2" more than the FZR unit. I'm thinking that's a good thing - a little more life out of a cam chain. That one cost me $35 with shipping, but it looks like it was worth it. If it makes the chain last longer, it will pay for itself over time.
I think I have a loose screw behind the handlebars.

I hope the spring has enough force to push the plunger another 3/8 inch. They get weaker at the end of their travel.

Wouldn't that be true of all of them? Even with a little bit of slack in the chain, if it has an opportunity to jump a notch it will do it. Then the ratchet action prevents it from going back in.

I was not getting the whole concept... I was tinking only the plunger part was to be changed. Forget my previous post.
