I have a 78 xs1100 with 16'' rear wheel .What axle spacers do I use ,do I use the same as the 17'' or something different? The rear wheel would lock up when torqued to spec. There was a spacer missing that is on the 1978 17'' wheel leaving about a 3/8'' gap on the axle and when tightened up it would pull swing arm in and lock wheel.Should I go to a 17'' wheel or can I use the 16''.

The 16" wheel can work. But there is a different setup of spacer and bracket between the wheel and the right side swing arm on a special and a standard. I believe you need the complete setup for it to work and not just the wheel.Life is what happens while your planning everything else!
When your work speaks for itself, don't interrupt.

In order to use the 16" wheel on the standard you need to use all the spacers from the 16" wheeled bike, and the 'torque' bracket that holds the break caliper. They are all different between the two and do not interchange. Do some searching and you will find there have been two threads in the last week regarding this same exact question. Im starting to feel like a broken record.
This may help a little. http://xs11.com/forum/showthread.php?t=28238
