  • Bike died after freeway...

So last night I was cruisin' around on my '80 XS11, I hopped on the freeway for about 10 mins and when I got off the exit ramp and stopped at the light, the motor stopped. I tried to start it and it just clicks once with no response from the motor. I unfortunatly had to walk it about 6 blocks down the road because of no parking signs... The battery seems good, tried to jump it with the same result, just clicks once. I don't think I blew the motor, or a rod, at least I hope not, I was doin about 90 for a little bit. But nothing sounded strange when it killed... Any suggestions would be great
Oh and yes it does have gas in it

If it still has the original fuse block, Check it.
Could have a bad fuse holder.

Check all the connections (Positive)from the battery to the solenoid to the starter,(Negative) from the battery to the ground on the frame and just in front of the battery box from the frame to the engine. Make sure all the connections are clean and tight.

Thanks, I will definetly give that a shot. I did notice that one of the fuses and its holder were separated from the block, it didn't strike me as a possible reason at the moment as to why it only tries to start for a second and the motor doesnt turn over... Hopefully that will work though, crossing my fingers

It is amazing how small of a gap those electrons refuse to jump over when we want them to and yet they reach out and bite us so easily.

Once had a fellow that could not get their bike to start, after chasing down the wiring, we found that he had just installed a new fuse block and one crimp connection was bad. Remade that connection and it fired right up.

I would go with the fuse idea.

Weird. I just got back from a 250 mile run. Been working on the carbs, and cleaning connections. The bike started losing all power when i am coming to a stop. Happened about 6 times. The bike ran great, except for my mileage went down from 40 to 33. Now i get to look at my fuse box, and power wires.

Hey Newbie, on the earlier models (1980 and older) that have the mech advance, they are very prone to the pick-up coil wires breaking. You may want to look at those as well.

I have repaired one allready, but this is a total loss of electrical power. All lights go out, and engine dies, all at once.

XS1100 Newbie, Might also check the connection on plug for the key switch located in the headlight bucket.
