  • XJ1100 J Carb Kits

I've a new project. My Nephew just purchased an '83 XJ1100 J. It hasn't been run for a couple years, and as you would expect, the float valve(s) are leaking. Anyone have a source for K&L carb kits for this mod. So far all I have found are "Po Boy Kits - needle valve and bowl gasket. If anyone has a Yamaha or Climers manual ya want to sell, please PM me.

I checked the yamaha fiche, and they don't show an '83 XJ1100 J. They show an '82 XJ1100 J, though. I don't know for sure, but they look pretty much like the 81 XS carbs, with slightly different jets. You might be able to get georgefix to put some kits together for you with the appropriate size jets. JAT
I think I have a loose screw behind the handlebars.

'79 XS11 Standard, Jardine 4/1, Dyna DC1-1 Coils, 145 mains, 45 pilots, plastic floats - 25.7mm, XV920 fuel valves, inline fuel filters, speed bleeders, Mikes XS pods, spade-type fuse block, fork brace, progressive fork springs/shocks, manual petcocks, 750 FD, Venture cam chain tensioner, SS brake lines

        Hi, DenyP...

If indeed it is an '83, it would have to be a Canadian built version.
They made them in '83, & '84 as well.

If it's an American version... it'll be an '82.

There's been a lot of discussion as of late about carb kits, Dynojet kits... etc.
So you should be able to find some answers... & sources.
        Take care.

The bike is in fact an '82. It might seem lame that I am asking for a source for XJ carb kits, but I have in fact spent several hours looking. George fix said he couldn't help me.

          Thanks

What parts do you specifically want to replace? The basic kits with the viton tipped needles and gaskets are probably all you really need. With the 'rubber' tip, the needle deforms a bit, but the seat should still be fine. The rest of the parts can usually be cleaned and returned to service. Every now and then you hear about a member that has trouble getting a jet out, and winds up breaking them. Should you run into that kind of a problem, the jets are easy enough to find. Less expensive that way, too.

By the way, I don't think it's lame at all. I did some looking too, and kits for that XJ's in general aren't exactly growing on trees.

IIRC, and I am sure one of the XJ owners will correct me if I am wrong, the XJ carbs are no different than the 80-81 XS carbs. The jetting I think might be different, but the jets, float needle seats and valves and the mix screw are the same. That is what comes in the 81 carb kits from George Fix. So I am pretty sure you can order the 81 carb kits and use them on your XJ.

The carb kit obsession . I bought a spare set of xj carbs for my XJ restore off Ebay. Looked really nice . The carbs on the bike were completely frozen, slides, jets plugged etc. After a few years of gunk and berryman gallon approach of cleaning I went and got the yamaha carb cleaner that mixes with gasoline. Am running the original carbs and did not buy a single part. Just replace what you need. save your money

Not meaning a few years on these carbs.

Yep, you probably won't need anything more than needle/float valve/o ring and possibly bowl gaskets. IIRC, same as the 81 Special. XJ uses a 47.5 pilot pretty sure.

Thanks to all of you for your input and advice. I will order the po mans kit and run all the jets etc through the carb cleaner. My reasoning in looking for complete kits - I would have everything I might need so there would not be any interruption or delays. You have convinced me!

                    Thanks
