  • Brake pedal shaft lubrication? (XJ)

    Hello everyone,

The brake pedal on my XJ became incredibly sticky and hard to press, or
lift back in to position, after sitting (inside) for a couple weeks. Everything
works, it's just incredibly hard to move
    the pedal.

I thought the M/C "spooge" hole
might be clogged, so I pulled it loose.
Well, after clearing the actuator rod from the M/C I noticed the pedal is the same, hard to press or lift, and it's not even connected to the M/C.

My manual says " lubricate the brake pedal shaft" but I can't seem to find where. I also can't figure out how to remove the thing so it could be cleaned up and lubed.

What holds this thing in? It looks like just friction since I can't see any type of clamp. Should I be able to use a block of wood and a hammer to knock this out? Also, where would one lube this shaft?

    Thanks,

    Dave Watson

The XS has a zerk type fitting for a grease gun on the brake pedal.

Oh my god. A question I can answer!!!!!!
      lol
The grease zerk is right on the brake pedal. There is a plastic cap over it. Pop off the cap and grease away.

mmmm...I don't recall a gease fitting on my XJ. I pulled it out and greased the shaft just after I first got it as the thing was so crudded up the brake pedal wouldn't come back fully.

Here is a diagram from ther service manual:

        As I remember it:
        Take off the brake pedal.
Unhook the linkage that goes up into the MC (items 5, 6, 7)
Note how the spring sits on the shaft; pay attention to both ends.
Pull the shaft out to the left side of the bike
        Clean, lubricate, and re-install shaft
        Reinstall.

I guess that is the ONLY way to lube the brake pedal shaft on an XJ since it doesn't have the zerk. The XS shows a zerk and grommet in the end of the shaft and the zerk sits right in the middle of the hole in the brake pedal.
