  • Stuck pilot jets

I took apart the carbs off the 79SF, and they were actually quite clean, well 2 were 2 had some sticky gunk in them.

Anyway, I got them all apart, except for 2 pilot jets. One I can turn out, but it won't come out of the hole, and the other I can't get to turn at all.

I assume I am looking at drilling at least the stuck one?

At first I couldn't get either to turn, but after soaking and cleaning, the one came loose.
Nice day, if it doesn't rain...

Patience....and argue with it a bit.....beats the drill would be my guess. Maybe a small piece of dry ice against it for a bit? Just a guess, could shrink it a bit and turn loose. Other options also........again, beats the drill thing.

I was thinking heat may work as well, but I'm just tired of these things.

From experience I can tell you, you will get ALOT more tired of them if you break off an extractor in there.

It is always faster to take your time and use heat and penetrating oil of some type over and over and over than to force these things. JMO

Try using a hammer and tapping carefully and forcefully screwdriver as it sits on top of the jet.... A couple of good hits and it should loosen up...Drilling is last resort...

I've never seen PB Blaster up here. I soaked them in industrial carb cleaner for a couple of hours. Will try penetrating oil.

The one that gets me is th eone that will turn out, but won't come out of the hole. How the heck do you grab it to pull it out?

I have to get these out as these two crabs were very gunked up with a hardish green resin so thosepassages need to be cleaned.

I also couldn't get one of the pilot air screws out. Why don't they make these things out of stainless?

SS is heavy! Not quite sure what to tell you about the one that spins but wont come out... Maybe the threads are bad?

Not that heavy! I am talking about the jets only, instead of brass.

I assume there is gunk that the carb cleaner couldn't get out, but it's not visible from above the screw.

If you have to drill them, use a left handed drill bit as sometimes it will spin out without using a tap.

Oh... right right. From my experience, SS would be very difficult to machine, especially that size of part... 0.010-0.050 drills break easy in SS.

I had never seen it before up in the GWN but I recently found it at Canadian Tire. I know it isn't the best out there, but hot damn it works good.

I will have to go see if our CT has any.

I finally got the one out, but for the other, I just used a different carb body, for the moment. I will play with it later.

We tried a couple of screwdrivers, and bent the tips of both.
