  • Turn signals quit

Ok today got my new bars, so happily went out and changed them, and as I got ready to ride, I started her up and checked horn, good, checked hi/low beam, good, turn signals,... turn signals, hmm. nope. bulbs are good. where to start? Running lights are on.

I had a problem with mine that a few of the sauders left loose in the switch case on the handlebars. Took about 20 minutes to rip it off and re-sauder.

If your new bars have been painted ro coated, they may be the culprit. The switch uses the bars as a ground, You can scrape the paint from where the switch mounts or run a new ground wire along the bars.

Are you sure about that? I thought only the Right control housing was grounded to the bars. I thought the left grounded elsewhere (like through the signal bulbs to the bucket).

I will vote for the broken solder joints in the switch. That, and/or some green corrosion on the contact pads that activate the flasher in the switch (the back sides of the solder joints). Either way, I'd say to open up the housing, remove a couple of screws and lift the guts out and clean them. A wire brush on the contact pads will get rid of the corrosion if it's there.

            Hi Rider
if this is your first soldering experience you may not know the secrets to success.
Make everything squeaky clean. Use lots of flux AND flux-cored solder.
And a man-tip. When the molten solder drips onto your skin a manly groan is OK but don't scream like a girl, doing that shows weakness.

Also, get a high powered iron that will heat the little rivet quickly. You want it to flow solder before it melts other stuff and then cool quickly.

If its your first go, you might want to get an old hand to do the repair and practice on something that isn't 30 years old and won't disappoint you if it doesn't work. Something like your wife's iPod should work, or your teenage daughter's cell phone. If you can't get those, try a policeman's radar, just sneak into his car while he is writing a ticket, several speeders will thank you.
