  • what the heck is the purpose of an Octy anyway?

seems unneeded with an off position on the petcocks. anybody have an opinion?

Not everyone likes to turn off their petcocks when they get off the bike.

It's an added security feature, just in case the float valves leak. The Standards have a similar setup with the vacuum valves in the petcocks themselves. The octy just takes the vacuum out of the petcocks and uses a single diaphragm instead of one in each petcock.

My personal opinion is that it was invented by Yamaha to give garage mechanics a reason to pull their hair out and hate fuel lines.

Really, it is an added protection to the carb float valves. If you do not mind using the off position on your petcocks, which I find easy to make a habit of, the octy is overkill. It also doubles or more the fuel lines on the bike. So far, I've ended up round filing them on the bikes I have owned.

Back in the day that device alone kept thousands of Yamaha mechanics employed...any not covered by the Octy were probably covered under the "trick" pick up coil wire coverage...

          Octy be gone

The octy has been the first thing I pulled off the four bikes that I've owned or still own. Even the F didn't fail or ever leak w/out turning the petcocks off.

Funny word - petcock - I guess that's why they place it between your legs.... just a random thought...

As best as I can determine, it is there to develop a leak in the diaphram and send more raw gas into the #2 cylinder than it can eat. This leaves the other three cylinders to be used as ignitors and this turns the whole bike into a fire breathing dragon.
While this is apparently VERY entertaining to your riding buddies it can be very hard on yourself especially if your adrenalin overflow valve should happen to stick shut. In that case the over pressure can cause you to hop about and emit loud screeching noises. And that is BEFORE you get the bike stopped!
I stored mine in the green storage bin by the shed and have not missed it in many years now. Having to change the oil should the float valve stick is far easier on your nervous system than trying to put out flames with your cap while doing a wild imitation of a war dance.

                  You mean the ACTUAL purpose?

Bike goes down....tipover switch cuts motor...loss of engine vacuum to octy (or vacuum petcock on standards) cuts off fuel flow. It's a safety feature, YUK YUK!

                    Actually

I just took mine off last week, and let me tell you its freeing. I don't think my bike has ever ran so well. (Probably not due directly to the octy but it corresponds and thats all that matters these days) I also just replaced my valves and everything inside the carbs, so I have found almost no motivation to turn the petcocks off still. I have left them on all night more than once and come out to a dry bike.

So the purpose of the octy is to make sure people are scared to touch there Carbs, and finally take them to the mechanic. Also to make sure that the astetic appeal of the engine never gets too strong. Got to keep a jumbled mess down there.

Funny how everyone bitches about the octy, but never about the standard petcocks. Same thing in there. Personally, I won't let a spring, o-ring adn piece of rubber defeat me. It takes at least two moving parts before I get confused.
