This site rocks.Charging 13 volt at 3 to 4000 rpm not keeping battery charged.New battery that as been charged at 2 amps over night checked connections. One thing puzzles me stator rotor has little to no magnetizim , will not hold a piece metal . Is this correct or does need to be running? 1978 xs1100 43000 miles Thanks guys

Behind the fuse panel there is a plug with green and brown wires that come from the field coil inside the right side engine cover. Check the resistance between these two wires they should be 3.5 ohms .

There is no magnetism until the bike is running. That's the purpose of the field coil (the part mounted on the center of the cover). Once the rotor starts spinning, and electricity is added to the field coil from the battery, that's when the magnetism starts, and allows the stator to create electricity.

I have to disagree with that. Go get a thin feeler guage, turn on the key, and the feeler guage will stick to the alternator cover, bike not running.

Nemesis, you might have some dirty connections on the alternator connector, also in back of the fuse panel.

That magnetism is only left-overs. The steel in the alternator parts have been magnetized over time by being close to the electromagnet. Once the alternator is working, you can stick a razor blade or a paperclip to the side of the cover without a problem.

The feeler guage will not stick when the key is off. Go and try it.

Ok, there might be a little magnitism left over, but definitly not as strong as with the key on. The 3 bolts remain magnetized.

Sorry.. I did not think of the difference between "key on" and "bike running". To me, that's the same. You are right. Once the key is on, the electromagnet is engaged, and it will hold metal. Mine actually does have a tiny amount of magnetism when the key is off though.

The point is that the "rotor" never has magnetism by itself. It becomes part of an electromagnet generator once it starts spinning. The field coil is what is magnetic once the key is turned on.
