Turn signal problem

I have this little problem with my turn signals since I have owned my bike. Not that it is real serious but when I use the turn signals, they eventually stop blinking and the light stays on. Does this exactly the same with a new battery or old, the problem persists. Not a big deal really, but any ideas? Where to start? Thanks Bruce

The bike is a 1980 xs 1100 sg (special) and it has 22,000 miles. Totally stock

if you rev the motor up do they start blinking again?

mine used to be really bad about blinking at an idle - i cleaned up all the connectors & grounds real good - now the blink just slows down.

PS. To all of those who helped me through my pickup coil problem, my bike is (has been) back to normal. I have stored away an extra for that next time.

Mine used to stop blinking until I revved the engine a bit. I changed over to a two prong electronic flasher unit that requires switching 2 of the wires on the stock plug around and now it flashes fine even at low rpm. I was having a problem with the stock flasher in that it would sometimes hang up and buzz loudly. When it did this... the turn indicator light would dim and at low rpms.... it would even draw enough current to kill the engine. Doing this does eliminate the self cancelling feature but I am trying to figure out a way to make it work again using a relay. Since the change... my turn signals are noticably brighter and flash at a more constant rate.
