  • Complete front end project

I decided to really tear into my 78 xs front end and basically rebuild, replace and enhance just about everything. This will include the following; front forks with new springs and race tech emulators - and new oil, fork brace, brake calipers stripped and rebuilt, braided brake lines, resurfaced and drilled rotors - with new paint, new tire (going with Pirelli Sport Demon), wheel stripped, polished and repainted and a nice clean donor fender from my 79 xs.

Also, I am refurbishing the whole steering system - tapered bearings, everything stripped and repainted. Plus, I am cleaning up and replacing a bad tach and basically stripping and painting everything else on the steering system. I will also try some new handlebars.

Once I am done with this I am moving to the back end.

I guess someone could ask why am I spending $1500 on a $1500 bike. I guess my answer is that the alternative is to spend $8-$10K on a new bike that I will trade in about a year - and probably lose $1500. I love my XS and can't think of any new bike (within reason) that I would want over this bike. Too much fun and character. There - now I have rationalized why I can spend $1500.

You're preaching to the choir here. No need to justify to us.
    I figure I've spent $3,000 on my $60.00 bike.

Before sinking that kind of money into the stock forks/brake, you might want to look at this:

I know my conversion won't be any $1500, and mine is certainly more money than Phils...
