    Someone stole my fifth gear!

OK, I pulled the bike out and attempted to shift while turning the tire. Seemed to work better, but going into third didn't work a few of the times I tried it. It wouldn't move, I had to downshift and then upshift and it seemed to work fine.

But!!!! I id find out that I am missing the pin dowel on the end of the cam shaft assembly that would allow me to shift in and out of fifth gear!

The retaining clip has been pulled back and the dowel is gone? It used to shift into fifth, so I imagine the culprit is the guy who rebuild the bike (me). Bike bandit sells them for next to nothing (Number 2 in the shift fork schematic from bikebandit.com)... but it takes time to get it here I guess I will take this up again next weekend. Drat! My problem isn't the PO it's the CO (current owner)

I used a small allen key and it shifted into fifth fine.

Still a little worried about third gear sticking, but may try to put it back together and see if it works on the road before I flip it on it's back and pull the bike apart again.

Almost ready to ship it off to one of you mechanic gurus and let you get it running for me.

Mine was missing that same pin when I got it. The whole tab was broken off. I got the pin from another XSive, and bought the star washer to replace it. One of the cheapest repairs I've done.

Also, you dont have to turn the bike over to get to the gears. It's a lot less work to do it on the center/sidestand.

Those springs can look fine and still be weak. You will notice the difference when you replace it.

Thanks, I ordered the dowel, a new dowel cover, and tension spring moments ago.

Hopefully I can get it installed next weekend. My wife is graduating with her Masters though... She may have other plans

Kidding! I am very proud of her and her accomplishments.
