  • Shifter won't shift

When I tried to shift through the gears, I can easily shift down from neutral into first, but sometimes the pedal stays down. Regardless it wont go into second or higher. Mostly is just sits limp? The bike isn't running just yet, but should be soon.

Any ideas? The clutch lever is hard to pull on the handlebars, but I don't know if that is an indicator of anything.

Any advice would be really helpful.

The culprit is most likely a broken shifter return spring, part#6 in this diagram. Oh, and lube the clutch cable.

Thanks, can I take the cover off without draining the oil? Any suggestions on the best source for a new one?

set the bike on the center stand and you won't loose much more than a few tablespoons of oil.

Also, make sure the dots and the line are all lined up before you put the cover back on. Its pretty simple in there, but its esay to over look. Not that I would have ever done that. Nope, not me. Really.

I believe that if it's on the centerstand, most of the oil will be below that cover. Not sure on that though. Bikebandit sells that spring for $6.85. For a little more, you could probably get it at a local shop too.

I might not have the spring on correctly, I remember kind of guessing when I reassembled it. I will tear into the bike this evening or sometime over the weekend.

Really appreciate you all and this forum.

I found this tech-tip and thought that this would be a good place to post it. Really good photos.

If you put it on the center stand you will get lots of oil leaking out . Put a piece of plywood under the left side of your center stand so it leans off to the right some. Once you take the cover off you will get some residue oil hanging just inside the cover but nothing a rag can't handle.

OK, The spring looks good, don't think that it is the problem. (will replace it anyway). But, When I try to shift without the gear cover on, by pushing the gears up or down, sometimes it sticks. I think the issue is with the Shift fork assembly. It looks like that might be what is sticking.

Any thoughts from you advanced mechanics? Can I look into this without splitting the cases? I can shoot some video and let you see it a little later.

No need to split the cases. Look through the tech tip on the dremmel 2nd gear fix and you will see all of the pieces in the shifting mechanism. Should help you see what might be happening.

Here is a link to the video I shot. Probably not much help, but I did it, so here it is.

Sam, try shifting as you did in your video while rotating the rear wheel while on the centerstand. Both my bikes do what yours is doing when the rear wheel is stationary.

Yep, these gears are not synchronized. They need the other gear moving to be able mesh in. On all of mine and any I have worked on, if you want to shift without the engine running, you need to rotate the rear wheel.

OK, So woud that mean that the problem may be with a weak tension spring after all?

As stated, the tranny won't shift thru all gears smoothly unless the rear wheel is moving. I may be wrong, but you might not have any problem with your shifter/trans. Does it shift thru all gears while slowly spinning the back wheel?
