Finaly got an xs11...

Well actualy I got two. Came across an add that someonw wanted to traide a 78 xs1100 special and a 79 xs1100 midnight for a running street bike. I have been looking for an xs for about a year now. It was hard to pass up. even with my wife getting upset and telling me not to. the 78 is hard to start, probably needs to have the carbs cleaned and then tuned up. The 79 ... well its a basket case. was laied down about 15 years ago and the put in a shed and forgotten (last registered in 95) Then some one worked on it and made a mess out of the wiring.

The 78 has with it full dress (just not on) hard bags, trunk, faring and engine gaurds. all a little rough around the edges. (My wife thinks it all need to go to the junk yard) I think they both have potential.

So I traided my 82 XJ750J Maxim for both bikes plus he gave me some cash. Now comes the hard part restoring both biles with little to no budget.

MNS were not available till the 1980 LG, check the serial number to see just what you have.
The carbs on the 78 could be done w/o any new parts as long as nothing missing or broken.
From stuff on hand, a lot of labor, about $50.00 and a little “horse trading” I did this…

BTW, SWMBO might have a little better disposition should a little chocolate and card materialize from the proceeds of the transaction.

I think you made a good trade. There are TONS of parts out there on eBay and from members here on the forum. You could easily make 2 running 11's.

Talk about a trade up! Good deal! Be sure to post some pictures, and keep us updated on the progress. As mentioned, the '79 is not a Midnight, but any XS11 is still worth a trade like that.

Hopefully it's not the dreaded "murdercycle" syndrome, perhaps she simply lacks the proper upbringing to appreciate a total bargain?

The '78 is a Standard because that's all they made that year. The '79 is not a Midnight because the first Midnight was (I believe) an '81, most likely it's a Special that a PO has blacked-out.
Never mind, they both have the potential to be beautiful machines.
And if you don't fancy that luggage you can sell it on e-bay for enough money to buy most or all of the bits and pieces needed to get both bikes back on the road.

"Finally got an xs11" That's exactly what I said to myself in 1980 as I rode my 78 XS11E home from the bike shop. When it comes to bikes it is a short sentence I will never forget. I had dreamed of one very soon after seeing the XS11 in ads shortly after I got to know my 78 XS500

She is more concerned that money is tight right now. The XJ750 cost about 1000 to get fixed up bu that includs the cost of the bike.

She definitly does not have the "murdercycle" syndrome. I got her her own bike.

Yep that's an 1980 midnight special, have a great time with your restoration, mine had been sitting in a garage since 85 when I found it in 06. took all winter for a complete tear down and rebuild but well worth the time and effort...Hope you enjoy both yours as much as I do mine.
