  • whats the dif between 79 n 80 Yamaha XS1100 Pick Up Coil

I know these have different part numbers, but if you have the entire assembly can you put 79 Yamaha XS1100 Pick Up Coil assembly in an 80? that is everything under the cover all of it? or is there wirering differences or whatever so you can't do a complete change? One year difference and they can't be swapped?
    till then

I'm not complety clear on the details, but I believe it has to do with the fact that the '79s used mechanical advance, and the '80s used vacuum advance.

Not done it myself but I believe there is nothing different from a 78 through 80 setup. You should be able to swap it out partial or complete. They all use both mech and vacuum advance in the ignition timing setup.

I just looked at some pics and it looks like the 79 is vacuum controled and the 80 is not? I am not sure but I think the wirering is different too? not sure?

All 78-80 have both vacuum and centr. adv mechanisms.

The only thing I can think of is the 79 special has less total timing than other models, no idea why.

I don't think this has anything to do with the p/u assys, though, but may mean a different vacuum advance.

As stated, the 78-80 models have both the centrifugal mech advance, and the vacuum advance.

In 81 they programmed the mech advance into the TCI and removed the actual mechanism. In 82 for the XJ model the also programmed the vacuum advance into the TCI and changed from a vac advance module to a vacuum module under the tank that sends an elec signal to the TCI.

As far as the pickup coils, there is no difference.

79 to 80 not 78 well I just bought a 79 and an 80 so in a couple of days I will know if there are any physical differences!? they do have different part numbers I do believe? The 80 XS1100 standard I bought didn't have any thing under the cover so I didn't have a clue of what it looked like or what was exactly missing so I went on fleabay in search and bought one of each if they are the same all the better because my main bike is my XS1100 special even tho I have my share of Goldwings which are great for trips but not hot rodding around and riding in town so I will have an extra set up if needed.
