  • Side Cover Key???

As you know, I am new to motorcycling at 45 yrs of age and have a '79 Special for my first ride! As a member here admonished me re: it being a fast 25 yr old bike.... I can now agree totally!!
    Waaahhhhhhoooooooooooooo!. LOL
I managed to find a left cover "INTACT" for the Special. Then... my grandaughter decided to help me with the bike and (dumb-a$$ me left it on the ground) accidently stepped on it. Broke the peg and the cover is in 3 pieces. So now I am repairing the one that came with the bike. NOW,,,,,, my question.....
I am new and not too bright :-) )
What key is supposed to unlock the Left side cover, holder/mechanism???? I only got an ignition key with the bike and it doesn't fit. I am thinking I should remove the 'holder' and modify it to a push-button, instead of a lock (?) what do you think? ) Thanks.
    Ride safe, CMA1
PS I would like to find a Speedo cable for this beast (if possible)

        Ignition key may work

CMA - ignition key may still work -

Mine goes only a little way into the lock and you can still turn the lock mechanism and out pops the bottom peg.

Try (carefully) as the lock may be a bit seized and you don't want to snap that key!

The ignition key is suppose dto work, but you will find that it does not insert all the way into the sidecover lock. Ppush it in as far as it will go, press gently in on the bottom of the cover to take some of the pressure off the latching mechanism, and turn the key with your left hand towards you. If it hasn't been used for a while, you may also need to give the lock a bit of a squirt with WD40 or ?? to loosen it up.....

Thanks very much for the replies folks!
I will try to lube the lock and free it up before I start "modifying"... LOL
I am not sure yet, but I thinkmaybe someone else had been trying to force it with a small screwdriver or some other tool. I may need to modify anyway.
            Thanks again!
            Keep looking up!

Both the cover and the lock can still be found if you need them.
I don't have the left cover handy right now, but I do have a couple of the locks. If you find that yours is messed-up let me know. You can contact me off list.
The covers show-up from time to time on e-bay.
