  • What do you think of an FZR1000 motor?

    Just follow me here..

#1. I AM doing a big custom build on my bike, my frame is stripped now
#2. I do intend to have suspension from different bikes front and rear, including swingarm with mono-shock and chain drive

-that puts me in a certain place right there-

Now XSChop with his chain drive conversion is awesome, but that conversion costs me at least $580 and there is still more involved, I also am not 100% sure my old 21K mile XS motor is even good yet!

    .
    .
    .

Now someone locally has a good 89 FZR1000 motor with all the wiring to run, for $450.

I figure at this point its still a ton of custom work, just different ways, but I could get this motor mounted in my XS frame (its already chain-drive), and go from there?

Hey I used to own a 2000 Yamaha R1, so the FZR1000 motor would be closer to my heart...

I know what this would involve getting the mounts right, having spot for radiator, etc.
    What say you?

I think its your bike, do what you want with it.

But I think that it will be more work then the chain drive conversion,
If you convert your xs to chain drive the mod is available and documented, then you have to swap in a swing arm, so limited motor/frame mods, extensive swing arm work.

If you go with the other motor you've got to do totally custom frame/motor mods to make it fit and centered and hope the chain has a clear path, figure out for mounting for radiator, swap electrics, etc. Then you still have to do the swing arm mods because you've still got to get chain drive on the back.

Never ridden an FZR so can't say how good the motor is...

I'd say if your going to change the front / rear suspension. The shaft to a chain. plus a motor to a FZR. Just buy a junk FZR and rebuild that.I would think it would be cheaper to find a FZR than what your going to spend to build a "Frankenbike" from an XS. Probably a lot less work to boot. How exactly would someone title something like that? Sorry, it just bothers me to see such a great bike chopped up. IMO you would turn more heads with a stock XS than a custom job....

I'm on the other end of the spectrum, I truly love the XS11 (I seriously believe it's the best bike ever made) and part of what makes it great is that it can be all and do all. I've seen touring versions, cafe versions, modern sportbike conversions, etc. and they all look cool (even the junky ones ) Hayabusa front end, modern swingarm and an FZR1000 engine would be awesome, lots of work, but awesome.

^haha thats funny, yeah that dual sport headlight w/ the 2 diff. sides is common and on naked sportbike fighters/stuntbikes.

I have already done this to MY frame and tank of MY XS11,
and I didn't chop up "such a great bike", I chopped up an old rusting turd that would have wasted away FOREVER guaranteed if I hadn't saved it..

I was kinda in a similar boat, my XS was more or less a basket case, so modifying it left and right never felt like a bad thing. Some people were negative to the idea when I made it a bobber (who cares) and now its almost completely apart again as I restore/modify the bike into a road race replica. The bike probably would've ended up as junk, at least I take care of it and it's still on the road 30 years after it was built. I would be in a different boat entirely though, if I started with a perfect XS11, that would just be a jerk on my behalf

In my opinion the XS frame is it's weakest link. It would be like having a marathon runners legs, pro wrestler arm, and the abs of a couch potato (no offense to anyone in any of those groups of people, particularly the wrestlers).

I too know it's your bike and you do what you want. Post pics so we can critique and admire.

                    I like the tank idea.
If you change all that stuff I don't think you could call it an xs.

Yeah I know its not an XS, just a custom build.

I was just e-mailing the 89 FZR motor guy. He still has the motor, just in the same boat as a lot of us and only needs the cash, $450.
