jacked up pilot screws??

I have had an idea floating around in my head about trying to fix carbs with messed up idle mix screws, the later model carb idle mix screws have a cylindrical tip and the earlier have a tapered tip , I have 3 sets of early model carbs with drilled out holes in one carb or another , could you just drill out the hole and then turn the tips of the idle screws till they are round not tapered to the same size as the hole .
