  • XJ1100 seat options..

... so when i first started looking at bikes, i wanted an xs1100.. however, my dad saw an xj1100 and decided that he liked the look of it better. since i wanted to buy something that both he and i could share and ride, i picked up the xj, despite having a preference for the oldschool flat seated bikes (see: xs1100, cb750's, and other flat seated bikes)... are there any seat options for my xj1100? like a flatter, xs1100-like seat? as anyone ever done stuff like this, or would know which direction to point me in?

    flat seat quest

    Hi,

I am struggling right now with this situation. I am too tall for the stock MNS seat, my legs are just too cramped. Ive put foam risers on the seat cutout and ridden it around, also tried a small air pillow for hunters.

My best suggestion is to just experiment with loose pillows or foam till you find some setup you like then have the stock seat recovered to your taste by an upholsterer.

AFAIK, there is no flat seat stocker that is a bolt on for your bike.

yeah, i've been doing research and i suppose these things are called "solo seats"? or even just like, a less gradual hump... like, i believe the smaller motored xj's came with a more subtly curved seat... can anyone confirm/deny?

I would say they did not. Check out the pictures of the '81 models in this thread.

even the seat on the xj650h would do... just something a little flatter.. would THAT one be a direct swap for my bike? or definitely not?

The XJ is limited in seat options. It uses a different mounting system than any of the XS11s, so swapping in a different seat is difficult, at best.

Your options kind of come down to these:

Put something over the seat, like a gell pad or sheepskin.
Have the OEM seat modified. Some people have done this themselves, others have had a local seat shop do it, some of the majors, like Corbin and Sargeant, will take your seat pan and build/modify a seat.
1 shop, Diamond Industries in Florida, will build you a custom seat on their own seat pan.

The seat I had on my XJ was recovered by the PO, and I found it to most uncomfortable. I went the Diamond seat route, found it to be a worth-while investment.
