Week one

So this is as far as I got my first week of re-assembly. Lost time in rust removal and painting the inside of my fenders. Also wasted a day looking for nuts, bolts and sockets, kids did me a favour and cleaned my shop.

Problem I have now is the axle spacer. Anybody have an extra or have the spec's. Thickness, outer diameter? I'm sure one didn't come off my bike when I took the rear wheel off, but that doesn't surprise me. Since I've taken "Hermes" apart, Ive found that the last service I got from a dealership was substandard. Rear wheel rubber was part of that, and I wouldn't be a all surprised if they didn't reinstall my original spacer. Just add this the all the other items I paid top dollar for a p..ss poor job. I assume it was supposed to be between the caliper bracket and the thrust plate?

Do a search on special rear wheels. There was discussion on this last year. I don't think the specials have a spacer. When I replaced the rear tire on my 79SF I spent a lot of time looking for it before I realized it didn't have one.

Never had a 79 Special, but on both my 81 models the only "spacer" is the dust cover to the rear wheel bearing on the brake side. The spacing is built into the rear brake bracket IIRC.

In this one, it's hard to see it, but the spacer is there between the caliper bracket and the wheel.


Here, the spacer is removed, it's a combo dust cover for the rubber seal as well as a spacer, fairly thick from inside to outside diameters, and I'm estimating about 15 mm thick along the axle direction. Sorry, I just had it out doing this, but didn't bother measuring it!


But it's the only spacer, so IF you HAVE the dustcover/spacer along with the brake caliper brackets, then you've got it all. IF you don't have the separate spacer, perhaps Andreas can help, haven't checked to see if it's still available from Yamaha?

found it

I went out just now and found it where it was supposed to be. Welded to the bracket and nicely painted over. Unless you know exactly what your looking for it was easy to miss after the painting. Thanx for the quick response people.

Hey Mack, That's looking sharp in deed!!! Great job cleaning up the engine. As pointed out you need a dust cover and that spacer that fits into the hole in the torque plate.
