  • XS850 gas tank??

Is the tunnel on the XS850 tank wide enough that it will fit the 1100, or would I need to cut out tunnel and weld in new one? Reason I ask is my buddy has an 850 tank in Pueblo and I'd rather not waste a trip if it won't fit without heavy modification. If welding in a new tunnel is only way to fit than I will just look for the Special tank.

    Thanks,
    Rob

The "tunnel" is not the problem the bottom of a 850/750 tank will hit the top of the the xs1100 tank. If you look on the bottom of the 1100 tank you will see how it was constructed to avoid coming in contact with the tank. You will have to notch the bottom of the 850 tank to allow it to fit.

      Hi tinman,
um, I'm not understanding your post; "look on the bottom of the 1100 tank you will see how it was constructed to avoid coming in contact with the tank". Duh?
As Rob supposes, the only way to put an XS850 tank onto an XS11 would be to weld it's outer shell onto an XS11 tunnel.
If one had a free XS850 tank, a damaged XS11 tank with a good tunnel, good sheetmetalworking and welding skills, that's a viable concept.
      Otherwise, buy a Special tank.
And Rob, there's most likely more list members who'd want a Standard tank for better fuel capacity than there are members who'd prefer a special tank for looks.

Good idea on the swap Fred. I will post right now on trades. Thanks again for your help.

I would wager what the Tinman was speaking to, is the tank is cut out to avoid the head of the engine. I do not believe the 750/850 has this issue.

Sorry about that I was using the tiny key pad on my I phone. There are many tanks availible around for the special it seems like a lot of trouble to tear apart a 850 tank and fit it to a 1100 tunnel unless you like more work. There is a nice tank for sale on eBay now and it's cheap at the moment.

Yeah, it really is a lot of unneccessary work. I got a lead on a trade for my standard tank. Thanks for the info.
