  • MNS Clutch kill switch wiring

While at the MOTM this last weekend, I got to thinking about the little switch on the clutch lever of the MNS (not sure if it's only the LH, or if other models have it too). It's a switch, just like the front brake light switch, that actuates when the clutch lever is pulled. It has a Black wire, and a Black/white stripe wire (might be a yellow stripe??), and a green connector in the headlight bucket. The 2 wires then get buried in the wiring harness that goes to the left side of the coils.

My question is, where does it connect? I assume it is supposed to kill the engine, or prevent starting under certain conditions, but I can't locate the other end of the wires. I also can't seem to make it do anything on either of the 2 LH's I have here in front of me. Has anyone traced the wiring for that switch to determine where it goes? I can't find it on the wiring diagram for the SG/SH (at least nothing with that color wire combination).

Your bike must have a cutout starting relay switch somewhere like the XJ , it's also tied in with the neutral position switch. You can follow the similar circuit on the XJ diagram.... HTH

That diagram is much better than the one in the manual... However, it's not exactly what I need. I don't have a sidestand switch or relay, and the wire colors are different. It's close, but I was hoping to find some definitive explanation of how the clutch switch connects to the "Starting circuit cut-off relay" on the LH.

Ok, well, I feel kinda dumb now...

On my bike, the neutral switch was hacked out, and I had to re-wire it outside the wiring harness to get it to make the light work. Somehow, the clutch switch must have also been hacked, to disable the cut-out feature. The bike I am working on has NOT been hacked, and I just realized that when it is IN GEAR, and the clutch is NOT pulled, the engine will not start (I can even hear the cut-out relay when I pull the clutch lever).

So, now I'm back to figuring out how it was hacked on my bike, and determining whether or not I want to un-hack it...

Perfect! That makes more sense. I just need to track down the original wiring for the neutral switch, and that should solve my problem.

Sounds like you got it. I can try to trace it out on my SH if need be. It has it and indeed does prevent the starter from engaging while in gear with the clutch lever released.
