The turn signals on the '80 XS1100G I just bought are out. No lights at all from the front or rear-except the headlight and tail/brakelight. Since the previous owner had thoughtfully supplied me with a used turn signal switch, a buddy who owns a Harley shop came over to see if that was it.
He found juice at the 4 lights, but the left rear bulb socket is corroded and we couldn't get the bulb to light. All the others came on at some point during the testing.
The thing is, none of it was consistent. The right side lights would come on and blink, but the left front came on with no blinking-nada from the rear. Sometimes the hazard flasher unit would work and you could hear it doing so-other times no. Sometimes you'd put the right blinker on, but the left would light w/o blinking. Sometimes the indicator light would come on, but not the lights. And we never got running lights to come on.
The bike has a fairing, and at one point the front end was swapped out with a non-fairing bike. I'm not sure if the signals worked after that.
My buddy thinks it's the flasher unit, but that doesn't explain the lack of parking lights. Could the bad socket be causing the problem? A combo?
There's an ugly jumble of wires in front of the steering head that somebody stuffed into a leather bag, probably when the swap took place.
My buddy is an ace with Harleys, been doing it 35 years, but he thinks this will take somebody familiar with the brand.
I live in Taxachusetts, so have to do the yearly anti-up inspection. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
