It seems like i saw a link the other day about xsancestry.com or something like that. I was trying to get more info on my bike, I have googled it but still can't find it. Is there a sight where you can put in your VIN# and see exactaly what you are working with?

What's your VIN, or at least the first 4 or 5 digits. Then there are some people here who can tell you all about everything you need to know. Or are you looking for a service report type thing that will tell you when people had work done on your particular bike?1978 Yamaha XS 1100E "Monster" 2010-2012

Catatonic bug has a personal website that has a wealth of knowledge on it.
There are part catalogs, I believe a factory service manual and also a serial number guide there for download.Kurt

For starters,
Check out CatatonicBug's website to download service manuals (links on right hand side).
Is there something in particular you are trying to do? Many things are interchangeable between the bikes. Some things only between standards or specials, and other things depending on the year. My 78 has some 79 parts on it that work fine.
Probably one of the biggest differences is carbs, but I'm not entirely sure what years the changes were made in, but the manual has a chart. Specials have a smaller rear wheel that is interchangeable, but their smaller tank is not...at least not without some intensive mods. The list goes on and on, so let us know what you're trying to do and someone here will have an answer. Sometimes 2 or 31978 Yamaha XS 1100E "Monster" 2010-2012

That would be a 1978 model which is the E model and it was only available int he Standard model configuration.
As to carbs, while there are differences between the early as in pre 1980 model carbs and the newer or 1980 and later models. Any of the carbs from any year will fit right up to any year and run the bike just fine. When tuning carbs, you adjust and tune to the year of the carb not the bike, except of course adjusting the jetting for particular modifications made to that bike.
Most of the standard models had very similar parts. But I do believe the 80-81 standards seats and such may be different.Life is what happens while your planning everything else!
