  • New XS11 special

So I just picked up a XS11 special from a friend down here in FL and it needs some work (quite a bit of work actually. Valves were bent from broken cam chain tensioner) I'm prepping a new head to go on the bike cause it's cheaper than buying new valves. I was wondering what I should do/check before I close it back up. I'm kinda new to bike mechanics but I've worked on a good variety of engines so I know bit about what I'm doing. I just got the manuals from catatonicBug. Bsically...

can I lap the valves clean the head and put it back together, ride it and plan to do a more detailed servicing later

    Or

Should I do the works for the head that is described in the service manual now (valve guides, grinding seats, etc... )

Lap the valves for sure and while you have the head apart change out the old valves seals, measure the valves springs and valve guides , no need to change them if they are fine. Check the valves for leaks and that should be fine.

It all depends on how much you can do on your own or how much you want to spend . Do the basics right the first time will save you a lot of time and money.

      Well,

You can't tell/know how much wear the "new" head has seen, but many on here have done just a simple lapping and have gotten good results. Inspecting the guides for wear, but if okay, then mainly just replace the oil seals, lap, and go! Of course make sure the head surface is true/flat and not warped, perhaps get it shaved if needed.

A search for a tech thread by TRbig called Got Defeated will provide more insight into the cam chain tensioner adjusting and R&R process. Hopefully you've found that you can replace the chain without splitting the cases. That would probably be the other thing to do since you're in there, as well as of course replacing the worn cam chain tensioner. There have been a few alternatives/mods vs. the OEM design. Either a solid bolt adaptation, or using a ratcheting newer design from a newer year/model of Yamaha other than an XS11...I can't remember it right now, but a search for cam chain tensioner will probably reveal the thread.

As I'm just getting to know this engine I'm going to ask some fairly obvious (maybe stupid) questions and I'm giving my self an excuse ahead of time.

which oil seals are you referring to? and how do I check the guides for wear? (do I have to take them out?)

          Waiting for head gasket...

I am also rebuilding/repairing my break system and I am having difficulty finding a caliper rebuild kit for my model. Would any one happen to know where I could find such a thing?

          I have a 79 XS11 Special

Try Ebay. There are few vendors on there. I have not bought brake kits as all of mine woked fine with existing parts just cleaned up. There is a seller named Georgefix that may have the kits your after. He is a known good vendor. I have used him for a couple carb kits and petcock kits and had great luck with him.

I believe the valve stem seals are the ones being refered to. These are located under the valve springs, and the stem of the valve passes through them. If you need more detailed info, just let me know.

thanks guys (and girls) I found the seals you were referring to and I ordered a set of viton seals. I've got quite a few parts headed my way now, so it's just sit and wait till they get here (this part always takes too long)
