  • bad pickup? xj1100

i swaped the Orange and grey wires at 6 pin connector and now 21/4 work
does that mean i have a bad pickup, i switched them on 4 pin and nothing changes. does that mean bad pickup i checked the pickups just visually anf they look new. does the red feed the coils then orange and grey go to tid then when the tid gets power does it go out the 4 pin down to the pickups via the ground wire black on 4 pin then up the 4 pin oange and grey
just trying to figure out if i have 12 volts to grey and orange at the 6 pin
and and nothing at 4 pin when cranking whats up?

i figured that i have a bad tid but drom the xj forum is says if toy swap the orange and grey at the 6 pin and it chages the firing cylenders then is a bad pickup nott a tid?

    how to i check pickups?

i do have a 750xj can i change the pickups? to test?

OK, the R/W wires at the coils have power as soon as you turn on the key and have the emergency stop switch on the right hand controls turned on.

The pickup coils send a signal through the 4 pin connector to the TCI and the Green/White or the Red/White wires there. The TCI then sends a pulse signal to the corresponding coil through either the Grey or Orange wires, again based upon which of the pickup coils send the signal.

Which cylinders were firing prior to your switching things around? I think you meant your getting fire on 1 and 4 now, which would be one coil operating. You may have a bad coil.

Find Member Randy's member page and he has a link to his personal XS11 website that has a page on how to test the TCI.

Also find member Catatonic Bug's page or any of his post, he host a site with all the manuals including the XJ. You seem to need a wiring diagram badly.

      bad pickups

i understand but does not the orange and grey go directly to the tid from coils
doesnt it go coils to 6 pin tid out to pickups back to tid then back to coils to fire or or tid 6 pin to 4 pin then pickups then back to tid then to coil?
also i changed my pickup from a extra 650 i had and same 2 cylenders fire.

2/3 fire when i change orange and grey at 6 pin 1/4 work.
but i changed my pickups as i said and 2/3 work and 1/4 still dont work
the orange wire coil is not working thats the one that goes to 1/4 coil
but i have to extra sets of coils that i no are good and have been changed it has to be the tid the part that fires the 1/4 coils isnt working thats why when i switch wires it just is running on the side that works and i it just fires the other coil ie the coils are fine otherwise switchiong wires would not fire the other 2 cylenders ie that coil. i have power at orange and grey and red at coils i have power at the red and grey and orange at the 6 pin part of the tid, and if 2 cylenders are working the pick ups must be working at least one of them but i have changed them as i said and same 2 cylenders are not working so not pickups. got to be tid i have done the soder fix and all connections in the tid looks good.?

Based upon the cylinder issues you have, and the fact you swapped for working coils (provided they were both 3 ohm coils as the XJ has). Then you probably have either a bad TCI, or just a bad solder joint on your TCI. Look at Randy's website on the TCI. ALOT of good info there, like how to test the TCI.

Cool, sounds like your on the right path from what you've described. And BTW, it is called a TCI on our bikes. When you get the TCI, or even now, be sure it is either for an XJ or one for an 81 model or the 4RO TCI. The earlier model 2H7 TCI will not work, or at least not well, on your bike.

Someone like Randy or one of our other more electrically inclined folks could much better explain that part than I can. All I know is that the last two years (here in the USA anyway) the TCI was very year specific as they started moving more of the timing function into the TCI. But I do know some folks are running the 4RO in their XJs with success.
