  • K&N air filters

I found k&n style air filters on ebay. It says They are for 80 and 81 models, and mine is a 79. Will they not work? I know I have the overflow tubes In the carbs and I'm not sure to do them. It says they are 54mm. I didn't know what the major difference in carbs was for those years though.

54mm be the right size - but be careful with knock-offs. If you do a search on pods, you'll find a number of references to pods with a lip around the rubber part where it mounts to the carbs. On some pods they will partially cover the air jets, with predictably bad results. The mikes xs pods work well, and don't suffer from this problem. JAT

Post a link to the filters if you can...

There are some out there that have a lip on the inside of the filter which can block passages in the bell of the carb, and also disrupt airflow to some degree.

The are made by EMGO I believe.

Mikes XS has pod filters which seem of good quality and do not have the lip...(plus they have a nifty XS logo pressed into the chrome end cap).

      http://www.mikesxs.net/products-40.html#products

I made the mistake of buying the EMGO variety the first time around, and I can tell you that the ones from mikesXS are much superior in quality, since I have both.

Just don't tell mikesxs that you are buying for an XS11, or they may refuse to deal with you.

      (dang..not quick enough)

I just put the pod filters from mikes xs on. I like them. I have had and still have K&N filters for my cage. The ones on mikes xs look to be the same quality. I went with the ones from mike xs cause the price was right, a lot cheaper than the K&N ones.

I would save my pennies and get the ones from mikes xs. IMO

          Pod style air filters

If I put these filters on bike, What do I do with the overflow lines that go into the airbox? And the hose going from below starter to airbox?

I've just got mine open. Some people put little filters over the ends. I tried that with lawn mower filters, but the paper elements eventually got saturated with water, restricting them and causing the carbs to overflow. They're OK open, but perhaps a little piece of screen over the ends would be better - just something to keep bugs and other stuff out. On the breather tube, I put a pcv valve on the end of it, and a mesh filter on the end of that, and wired it up under the seat. You don't have to use a pcv valve, and you'll probably get conflicting opinions on them. I put it on to create a little negative pressure in the crankcase, but I don't know that it does a whole lot. I still kind of like it though .

This is what I did for the crank case vent tube. Used a piece of aluminum angle. Mounted it to where the air box would go. Bought a beather filter from my local auto parts store, $6.00. connected it all up.

Here is a pic. Ignore the little bit of rust on the battery tray.

Sounds good, thanks for all your imput. I think I'll just get the Mikes filters. They are red anyways which will look better on my bike cause its blue.

Well I was answering samm895 question on what to do with the breather vent line.

I figured there are plenty of pics of the mikes xs pods on here anyways.

I have a stock battery tray from what I can tell. I could be wrong though lol
