  • Will the manifolds of a 1979 XS1100 fit my 1982 XJ1100?

Anyone know if the 1979 XS1100 manifolds will fit ok on my 1982 XJ1100?
They look the same, but wanted to reach out to see if anyone knows on here? Thanks!

If your asking about the intake boots, they should be a like for like swap out.

If your asking about the headers, they will fit, but I am not certain that the geometry of the XS headers fit up with placement of the mufflers on the XJ frames, but I really do not know that part for certain.

They'll fit just fine, both the intake and exhaust manifolds. I have a G and a J and the manifolds are interchangeable.

Is your XS a Standard or a Special? The XJ uses the infamous octopus to control gas flow, thus requires the vacuum nipple used on the Special, IIRC. On the XJ the ignition uses a vacuum port off the intake manifold on carb #2 with the tube running up to a vacuum sensor located under the seat. I don't know if this is the same port used by the vacuum advance on the '79, could well be. I do know that hooking the XJ vacuum sensor to the wrong port - #2 has a restrictor in it - will throw off your timing curve a bit.

None of this is any big stuff. You just have to be aware of the vacuum ports and where the tubing goes, which is different beween the XS and XJ.

Intake boots are the same part number for all the bikes from '78 through the XJ.

Exhaust manifolds will fit. Muffler hangers are different; the XJ muffler mounts on the rear footpeg sets are closer to the front of the bike than on the XS, so you will have to tinker with the muffler mounts if using XS mufflers.

The XJ mufflers are shorter and angle up slightly, the stock mounts take this into account but for other mufflers you might find the mount is to high. A short strap between the mount and muffler may be needed.

One advantage of the stock XJ mufflers is they end before the rear axle bolt, making removal of the rear tire easier. The XS mufflers extend past the bolt, and the XS came with a "link' in the tool kit that one uses to hold the swing arm up so the axle would clear the top of the mufflers.
