  • Unidentified Relay

Just cleaning all the electrical connections. I came across a relay underneath
the fuel tank that I can't identify it has 4 connections a black wire to 86, a white wire to 30, a red-yellow to 85 and a blue wire to 87 there is a jumper between 85 & 87. I cant find this on any wiring diagram. everything else I have identified

Sounds like a aftermarket relay for a air horn or driving lights .

Yup, standard aftermarket relay. The jumper between 85 and 87 will cause it to latch. My bet is that the PO replaced the headlight relay with a standard aftermarket.

Sure looks like replacement for headlamp relay. Why the jumper? What happens if I leave the jumper off? I liked the idea of using an aftermarket relay to power the coils with battery voltage seems that would eliminate weak spark issues.

As randy stated the jumper will make it "latch" so once the bike starts the headlight will stay on until you turn off the key, just like the factory relay. If you take the jumper off then if the bike were to stall, the headlight would go out.

My question for those in the know, does the fact that there is no diode in that jumper(i'm assuming) cause any issues? Isn't that trigger wire hooked to AC current from the stator?
