how did you get my plugs

If I didnt know any better I would think you took those plugs out of my bike and took a picture of them, i suspected float height as well, so I swiched the floats from 2 and 4, but it changed nothing, 4 was still the riches (blackest), so i dont believe float height is my problem, maby you could try the same. Im new here, hope its not a silly suggestion. I am going to try a smaller main in 1 and 4 next, let you know how that goes.

    Thanks

First thing is the blue on the pipes is from being too rich and firing unburned fuel in the hot header pipe. There's info out there that back this too. Second, the XJ with the YIC used one step higher main jets than the 81models. 112.5 will work fine in the XJ with the YIC. The step richer thing in center cyl. with the 81's is kind of a mood point and can be ignored. 110 mains is pretty much the standard with stock intake and 4into two exhaust system, even spagetti set-ups on the 81's. Float levels, all eight exactly the same set at a 26mm static setting will get you close to the engine idleing clear tube setting of 3/16" below carb body housing. More specificly fuel levels where carb screw base and lock washer meet if that makes it easier. re-sync, set idle mix either by ear or color tune, resync again followed by idle mix setting. Do all this at no more than a 1000rpm. Lower the better to dial in sync and idle mix. Do mine @800rpm as it is not quite at a lope at even that low rpm. Get everything working properly, fuel mix, etc. it will idle down low as 450-500rpm before a lope sets in. After all that set idle back at approx. 1100rpm. Be sure and do all this with a fan in front of motor as it will overheat quickly! With the YIC on the XJ's hook up for the carb sync is a bit different process. MadMax, Jerry Fields or others with the XJ can give the correct how to on that if needed.

I did not get back to the XJ1100 until last Thursday. Our daughter and her husband bought their first house and I painted complete first floor.

I cleaned the carbs, set the float height and bench synced.

I installed the carbs (a lot more difficult then removing them).

I used my new colortune plug to set the idle mixture screws. Cylinders 1 through 3 dialed right in. I had to back the #4 screw all the way out. It actually came right out. I put it back in, but just. I got the bunsen blue but still had flashes of yellow. I think the float is still too high.

Yesterday I re-install the tank, (think octopus) the side covers and the seat.

I started up and took it on to my street. One twist of the throttle told me it was working! Strong, strong pull from 1100 rpm all the way to 8000 rpm. No hesitations, no popping on deceleration just straight shoulder popping power!
        Wow!

I took it for a 30 minuet ride and it is so smooth and powerful.

        Thanks for all the help.
