I posted a while back about the 80 special I have and the parts i bought at BOBS motorcycle salvage in Phoenix. I ended up getting what looked like a practically new air box off of an 80 special for 35 bucks it even had a K&N air filter in it the rubber was good and I installed it on my bike, WHAT a difference it starts right up now and accelerates much better now and the shiny metal sides to the box are perfect it fit real easy in the space for it. Prior to having no airbox it was hard to start ,i needed starting fluid to start it when it had cooled down ,but now it starts almost instantly when i touch the starting button for a second even when the engine is cold. I suppose the vacuum through the narrow box is responsible for drawing fuel up also the vacuum advance . Also i took a rack off the back of a standard it fit great on my bike , got the chrome steel package rack for 10 bucks. Well the bike is doing much better now .
If you were running without an airbox, you were probably a bit on the lean side. A lean condition will make the bike harder to start. Putting the airbox in place should have richened it back up to where it should be. Anytime you make changes to the intake or exhaust it's going to have an affect on the jetting. Sounds like you got it nailed, though, so I'll just shut up now .
I think I have a loose screw behind the handlebars.
