i think you may be SOL..... some covers have round holes for the upper mounts while some have "slots". the covers for my 80 and 81 are identical...i think the '79 had slots on both sides.....i imagine you could dremel out difference to make them fit.......but not positive...

I have a 79 standard and the side covers each have two slots about 1 1/4" long for handing them on the mounting tabs on the frame.

The 79 specials use the round holes not the slots like the 78 and 79 standards. IDK if the 80 standards use the sound holes or slots...your going to have to find out what each bike is.

Nope, 79 Specials have slots on both side covers.

Whoops, my bad. The only difference between the 79F and 79SF is the upper corner where it meets the tank.

Lol, they are a different shape (78-79F and 79SF) and the 79F is longer too. The only thing in common is the slots. Better go look at yours again.

Yeah IIRC, the 80 and 81 are somewhat interchangable between the standard models and between the Special models. That is if you do not really care what emblems are on them.

The 78 -79 models and especially the 79 Special are unique, again, IIRC.

Actually from what Andreas has said the 79 special side covers will swap with 80 or 81 standard side covers with a little work on the left side cover. But standards and specials in the 80-81 range are different IIRC and don't even mount the same (special uses round holes on both side and standard uses round holes on left and slots on right).

Sorry if I was misleading, I meant that 80-81 Standards I believe will swap, and I know for a fact 80-81 Specials will swap directly. I bought several versions for my Banshee project including some 80 MNS ones that are on it now and it is definitely an 81 frame.

Yes, correct, and 79 specials and 80-81 standards will swap but the emblems will be wrong. I believe that you need to dremel the left side cover at the top as well, but everybody seems to feel that is easy to do.

Well, I guess that is all in how you define swapping. To me, if I have to dremel something to make it fit, it is not a swap or direct replacement, can be made to work. Just saying, some idiot could read this and post his side covers for a 79 Special on ebay and tell someone they will work on an 80-81 Standard. Then the poor guy who did not know anybetter and has no tools is screwed.
