  • Oops!!

Well I did a dumb one.I'm not posting to confess I just don't want anyone else to make to same mistake. It's been about a month and a half since I got the slotted cam gears installed and winter repairs done. After reading posts by Big daddy Funk and Dan Hodges I decided to advance the intake cam 5 deg as that is where they seemed to gain the most power with the hot cams.So I set up the intake with about 5 deg of advance and said close enough to start. After experiencing intermittent back fires at idle and exhaust gas pooching out of the carbs.I thought I must have to much advance on the intake cam. Then last night when working on the problem the lights finally came on.5 deg advance measured from the crank shaft. After taking careful measurements The intake cam was advanced 13 deg.Lucky I don't have any bent valves. After setting things up like I like to refer to as the RIGHT way it idles fine and pulls supper hard 6000 - 8900 rpm. With good enough low range to still be comfortable in town.

That could have been a costly mistake. Glad you caught it.
