  • Tach not working

78 xs11 - tach works up to 2000 - then the needle stops. Won't go any further. Any ideas?

Is the needle broke or rubbing on anything?Does it move when you give it throttle?

Mine was stopping around 10 o'clock, sometimes would stick there, and than at 2 o'clock if it got that far. Found a small metal piece inside the tach, kinda like a counter-weight or something, on the bottom end of the tach needle that had partly dislodged and was sometimes contacting the mounting posts inside the tach. Snapped it back into position and everything has been good.

I never tried turning the throttle - maybe I will see how that works!

Seriously, I could not see anything that was impeding the arm. It works up to the 2K mark and then stops. I guess I will take off the plate - how does the face plate come off?

After removing the back cover, you'll have to pry the lip up that holds the face plate on. A paint can opener tool thingy works well in some spots and a flat blade screwdriver in others. Be extremely careful and take your time and it will come open.

There's some more info in this thread....
