I have a 1982 Xj 1100, Had problem with the transmission stuck in second gear. Took everything apart thinking the shift fork was bent. While getting ready to take the trany apart I realized that where the shift lever attached to the second linkage inside the cover a retainer clip had fallen off. Its sort of like a small horse shoe. Please excuse my discription, but i wanted to know if this part is something that i can by at a Murrays, bc i cant find the part on bikebandit or cheapcycles. Also does anyone know how i can find wich bolt length goes into wich places on the clutch cover assembly, gear lever, and bottom oil pan. I am a beginner and apreciate any help. Thanx

No differences Yard Dogg, physically XS&XJ(Maxim) same-same. ride4fun, as Yard Dogg stated a local bolt/fastener supplier best source. An Ace Hardware or Tru-Value has anyy of these you may need in thier specialty trays stainless, chrome, whatever. Always seems to be a good quick source for bout any type fasteners, standard or metric!81H Venturer1100 "The Bentley" (on steroids) 97 Yamaha YZ250(age reducer) 92 Honda ST1100 "Twisty"(touring rocket) Age is relative to the number of seconds counted 'airing' out an 85ft. table-top.

The entire frame and "body" as in tank, seat, forks, triples, handlebars and how they mount, I think even the fenders are different on an XJ than on any XS. The airbox and even the enricher operating method was changed on the XJ from the XS. So there is not as much parts the same as it may seam.
However, except for the YICS thing, the engines are the same and are interchangable. The best thing about the XJ is the better alternator puts out more juice.Life is what happens while your planning everything else!

There are a few other circlips, on the different shafts in there, and they are all the same diameter. While you're in the engine, just pull another one and take it to a parts store and tell them you need it matched up. They are a fairly generic item.Ich habe dich nicht gefragt.

The circlips (aka, Snap-rings) can be found at Ace hardware. I had to replace that very same one on mine. I did find the missing ring down in the oil pan, but it was bent so much that it would not stay securely on the shaft. Be sure to check the other end of the shaft (the oil pump idle gear, under the clutch basket) and make sure THAT end has it's snap-ring too. They tend to fall off that end too.
As for the fasteners, there are only 2 sizes (both are the same diameter, but one is longer than the other). You can tell which one goes in which hole by looking at the depth of the hole. The left side cover (where the shift lever is) only uses the short version, while the oil pan uses 4 long ones across the front, and all the rest are short ones. The right cover (with the clutch under it) uses a combination of the two sizes, and it's easy to tell which one goes where by looking at the depth of the hole.1980 XS850SG - Sold
