Top speed??

Hello all,

I'm new to this site....and to the XS1100. I recently bought a 79 Special off a co-worker. I had no idea that there were this many enthusiasts, but either way I love what you guys are doing with these things.

What I'm looking for is some specs. Maybe a link with some basic info if anyone has one.

Also.....I'm wondering - What is the Top speed on one of these stock late 70's - early 80's Xs11's? With mods?

Inquiring minds want to know - well, atleast mine does.

Top speed.......who cares anyway.......lookin for high speeds buy a Busa, Blackbird or R-1. Other than that, fast enough to kill you. With mods.....ain't gonna happen.....alot of weight and alot of mother nature out front and not enough H-power to overcome speeds you may be thinkin' of.

I guess when I asked that question I was looking more for performance specs. This bike that I just bought is 30+ years old and I was wondering what kinda of power these things butting out back in the day vs. todays bikes.

I think it's 96 horse power, 125 mph for a special, 135 mph for a standard. I'm sure some people will tell you more...but that's what I have done.

These bikes speced out at 95 (96...close enough) HP, but that was not at the rear wheel. RW was about 75 IIRC.

Top end, well, for my 81 Special, I have not found it yet. I just do not own a big enough pair. I know I have had it over 120, but being an 81 my speedo quits at 85, so it is all calculation by RPM from there.

For some, these bikes have almost enough power, for most of us though, they got enough to put the fear of God in you. The biggest issue is getting to come back down to that zero mark. Thats the part they kind of suck at.

speed and horsepower

i recently purchased an 80 model xs11g with vetter fairing my speedo only reg.@85 also,however had a friend who is a member of a local enforcement agency shoot radar at 123 mph and like everyone else said getting the big brute too slow down takes a while. even stock and needing new mains this machine just wants too keep eating asphalt. best 800 dollars i have ever spent!

I think the drive shaft is the best brake on the bike. As long as the back tire doesn't lock up.

"80G, Full Factory dresser, unfortunate "observed" speed at 127. With two up. no sweat to hit 113-115. Easy cruiser at 80-90, even with two up and power left to pass. As mentioned before, 'nuff to get ya in alot of trouble quick.

I think with all bike you get used to the power. I bought a 99' ZZR1100 years ago and it was like 'omg epic super powa!!' Then I got used to it and the novelty died, I upgraded to a ZX12R (with mods) in 2004 and had the same reaction but also became used to it, went back th a 650 V-Strom in last year and was like 'meh not much poke' but I got used to it and it felt just like the other bikes.
As long as it can outdrag the cages from the lights and overtake the road trains and B-doubles on the highways, its powerful enough
