Ok here is a weird one. Went on an overnighter yesterday, bike ran fine up to the campsite, as per usual. Bike always runs fine, has been the most faithful thing going. Got up this morning loaded up the gear, and drove off. After about 10 minutes of riding the bike just died completely, but everything still worked, except for no spark to the plugs. Had lights, horn, turn signals, everything, but no spark.
Left if for about 20 minutes and it started up again. Altogether this repeated 4 times before we gave up and Phil Murphy drove to Nanaimo and returned with his pick up truck. Of course we quickly removed the Yamaha symbols on the tank and replaced them with Harley ones so no-one would see a Yamaha in a pickup truck. :-)
In the process of troubleshooting, we cleaned all the plug-in connectors under the tank and seat, checked and replaced the TDI unit, checked the mercury "fallover" switch, disassembled and checked the kill switch, but nothing helped. We removed the side cover and wiggled the pickup wires as well. We're stumped. This thing will run about 10 minutes then shut down with no spark on any of the plugs until it's cool again. This just happened instantly, the bike was dead reliable until this morning. New battery, fully charged too. Any suggestions??? Checked and replaced all the fuses too. What could cause a total loss of spark to the plugs but let everything else work????? Maybe Phil can add to this if I've forgotten something.
