ummm.....if your valve cover gasket has gasoline getting to it, you got much bigger issues than what gasket material you used.
I know I have used RTV on Banshee and it holds up great.
On Thunderstruck, I have one I cut form some material from Autozone. They only had one type of material in a sheet big enough to cut the gasket from. This is the biggest dimensionally of all the gaskets I ever used on this bike. It has held up pretty well, but I do get some minor seepage here and there. RTV is better from my experience. YMMV. Good luck on cutting your gasket, save yourself alot of time and trouble and print out that gasket guide from the Benefiscal UK XS1100 site.
