You'll find the VIN number on your motor right above your clutch cover.. and also on the left side of the steering neck (Triple tree) on a placard.. and stamped into the metal on the right side of the steering neck. Do those numbers match the motor? If so, it appears your "F" may be an "E" ('78)
It will officially go by the numbers on your steering neck..

Sounds like you have a 78 there. Pictures are always helpfull. As old as alot of these bikes are and as many owners as they have been through, ,any of them have had parts switched out from one type to another, effectionately known as "Frankenbikes".Life is what happens while your planning everything else!

Hey now...i resemble that last post!
I saw one the other day that had special forks, standard tank, special guages and some home made rear end. looked okay, but those that have seen these bikes do a double take and think..."WTF".'81H (my first XS ) "Grey Ghost"
