I know that there a slight differences in these two bikes but what specifically are the differences in the charging system, engine/drive train. I was reading a thread about elec. add-ons and how it could overload the system. I am replacing some of my lighting with LED, the rear directionals and tail light so far, but I do want to run driving/fog lights ( thru a relay) and don't want to screw up my electrics. Any suggestions, hints? Oh yea, PS, does anyone have one of those rectangle headlights from the 750?

Basically, from the cylinders down and back to the final drive will swap out mechanically with the 80 and up XS.. though you would still have the YICS tube on the back of the cylinders. You could still swap the whole motor, including the head, but there are differences with the add-ons like a oil level switch instead of a pressure switch.. but you can swap those things. Everything else is different basically. If you want the charging system off of an XJ, you'll need to use the rotor, stator, and XJ cover.. then change the plugs going to the Reg/Rect unit.

The XJ uses a brushed alt, and puts out about 5 more amps max than the XS's brushless. It has more loads due to the other electrical components including the instrument cluster and computer. Using the LEDs' will help to further free up precious amps for your AUX lights. As was recently posted, you may want to look into alternative AUX lights....ie. the HID style that use a transformer...IIRC about 35 watts to drive a pair vs. the 110 watts for a pair of H4/H3 55 watt halogens!!
Have you checked the brushes for the ALT? Inexpensive replacements on Partsnmore.com for them if they are worn.

Assorted questions
Thank you Gentlemen (and I use that term loosely) I have just acquired a second 82 XJ1100 for use as parts for #1. If you know anyone who needs a titled frame I will swap for a straight replacement, anyway I will check the brushes as I am in a partial tear down mode. Will be tackling the front tubes soon so any tips on those would be welcome. #1(the rider) was not a stock bike when acquired but #2 (donor) was, with the addition of a Vetter fairing. I am still minus a head light and am looking for the rectangle one (upper) from a 750 (anyone?)Just ME and my 82 XJ 1100. The XS11 standard version used a rectangular head light. If you are looking for the entire bucket and such, that is another option.
Also, you might check mikesxs, I think he has buckets and lights, but I am not sure...Ich habe dich nicht gefragt.
