  • Tires ??

I recently bought an older 79 xs11 special. I am in the process of getting her back in shape and I am wondering what all you 1100 nuts are running for tires these days? Dunlops, Metzelers, Bridgestones ... the list goes on. I am a fairly conservative rider and need some rubber that do all the right things. Not too much into wet weather but will get stuck now and then. A tire that will give me decent performance over the whole spectrum. Thanks I appreciate any feedback. Ride On................

I prefer the round rubber ones.

I'm certain someone here will elaborate......and elaborate......and elaborate.

Finish your profile and add in exactly what your riding in your signature and let us know what type of riding you . That might help with suggestions.

Welcome to the forum! There are as many opinions on tires as there are owners of bikes (probably more, actually). A search will give you hours and hours of reading, and you will probably be no closer to an answer than you were to begin with.

It kinda depends on whether you are looking to put cheap rubber on your wheels, or if you want to invest in your safety. Also, as was mentioned, it depends on hat kind of riding you do (long distance touring on the slab, running around the city, or high-speed runs through the twisties). Some tires are stickier than others, and do well on the twisties, but tend not to last as long. Others are harder, and last longer, but might not hold the road when you're pushing the effects of Newton's laws.

Personally, after reading through lots of threads and asking a few questions of my own, I bought a cheap Shinko SR712 (because at the time, I needed cheap rubber), then later, invested a little more in a Dunlop Elite-3 rear tire. I have heard some people say that the Elite3 is NOT good as a front tire, but I have not heard any negatives about it as a rear. So far, I have no complaints about either tire.

        Let the debate continue!

Just don't put any air in the new tires and forks and it will handle just fine.

I'm new to bikes in general, so I'm not doing anything wild. I ordered some shinkos off of motorcycle superstore and so far nothing I can blame on the tire...but it has only been one day and 100 miles...
