My 81' when cold fires almost instantaneously as soon as I touch the starter, yet if its been running for a while and its still warm it can take 2-3 goes before it fires. It has no choke either... Just wondering if its better to give it no throttle or some throttle? I cannot work out a happy medium for it.

Sounds like idle circuit running a bit rich. When it's warmed up and you shut it down, then coming back to it in a short, just start cranking and roll the throttle gradually just a tad. Should start a bit quicker and easier......yea, occassionally have to do the same thing, so was'nt just making a stab in the dark so to speak.81H Venturer1100 "The Bentley" (on steroids) 97 Yamaha YZ250(age reducer) 92 Honda ST1100 "Twisty"(touring rocket) Age is relative to the number of seconds counted 'airing' out an 85ft. table-top.

My Thunderstruck is the exact same way. Stock exhaust and air box with stock jetting on very clean carbs. Yet, If I just got off of it or within 1/2 hour or so and go back to start it, I have to roll the throttle just a touch when I hit the start button to start it. From cold, just touch the button and it starts right up on full or half choke depending on the temp. But once warmed up, needs that little touch of air.

I have that same issue myself. I notice it is most apparent when I have run a long distance (engine is REALLY hot), and stop for a quick pit stop. If I go right back to get on the bike it tends to not want to start. I give it a little gas, and it eventually fires up.1980 XS850SG - Sold
