  • XS bearings??

    Hi there,
I have an XS1100 that locked up on my son-in-law.
It was torn down and we are told the the bearings are out of the middle unit and that you can't get them anymore.
    Is that true??
If not true, then where ??

    Thanks,
    Chuck

      Hey Chuck,

What Potter's saying is that the middle Drive unit is fairly complex, takes some special tools and such to work/repair/ adjust properly. Also, if locked up, then aside from the bearings, the shafts and gears may have also suffered damage.

SO...lots of folks parting bikes out on ebay, so you can usually find a replacement middle drive quicker, cheaper, than trying to have the one that's frozen up worked on!

The one that froze up....had he checked it for oil? They can sometimes leak, and when they run dry, they seize. Folks sometimes drain that bolt thinking it's the ENGINE drain. Takes about 300cc's of 80-90wt hypoid type gear oil, can be dino or synthetic. It can be removed and replaced without pulling the engine.

If the middle drive is in fact the problem.....several of them on e-bay for less than 30bucks, plus some menbers here have extras that they may be willing to part with to help get your scoot back rollin' again.

I also have one from an '77 XS750. I think that would work. You would need to check with the experts here first though. $30 + shipping.

Check the 750 real close for bolt pattern. It may be one bolt short when compared to the xs11. I had one from ebay that was NOT from an xs11 (not sure what it was from) and it was obvious that from looking at the cap, it was one bolt too few. I did try it and it weeped oil.
