  • K n L carb kits

    Hi,

Ive seen criticism of the K n L kits here on the list. Georgefix just sent me a set that were K n L, but he had no info in the ad , nor did he bother to tell me about the brand name. After eyeballing one of the kits, it appears to have matching holes in jets to my original jets. Are the K n L kits ok now, or not. If not, what are the best kits to get.

    carb kits

i just purchased a set of carb kits for george fix about a month ago, he also sent the kL kits to me. i installed them last week in my 79 spec. they were all the right parts except the main jets were a size smaller, so i figured i would try them since my bike was running very rich. turns out to run fine but had to turn mixture screw out 1 turn more than before. i would say they worked out fine for me.

The jets that are included for a '79 are usually 137.5 mains and 42.5 pilots. If you're running all stock, that should be the correct jetting. (It's helpful if you put the details about your machine in your signiture - eliminates asking the same questions over and over.) If you have mods, then you need to compute the jetting based on 'jetting recommendations' in the tech tips. The main things you're going to use in a carb kit are usually the fuel valves and the bowl gaskets. If the carbs haven't received any attention in a long time, you may find you have to replace some jets as they sometimes break on removal. I usually buy my jets at Mikes XS ($3 a pair), and get the carb kits from George Fix, partsnmore, or Z1 enterprises. Make sure you use genuine mikuni jets. The jet number from manufacturer to manufacturer can mean different things, so save yourself some headaches and stick with the genuine miks.
I think I have a loose screw behind the handlebars.

There is nothing wrong with K&L kits. You just have to verify you get the right size jets. Georgefix is good about sending the right kit, just make sure
order for the right year, then check the parts against your old ones.

          kits

Hi, Ive done all that, and they are numbered identically to the original parts and visually compare well also as far as the pilots, mains and idle mix jets. I will call him to be sure that these are mikuni jets . Thanks guys.

So, which should he do, get genuine Miki's or order the jets you are referring to from all these other locations (that are NOT Miki jets)? JetsRUs sells genuine Miki's at a reasonable price. Other than them and the dealers, I can't remember any other sources for Mikuni brand jets.

The K&L kits are fine, I've used them in two xs11's now and had no problems, well at least no problems due to the stuff in the kit. The only thing I don't use from the kits is the needle, if you compare your needle you'll see it has a slightly different profile, I tried the k&l needle and didn't like the way the bike ran with it so I went back to my stock needle.

I put the FULL K&L kits in mine. Everything except the needles/emulsion tubes. No problems whatsoever. Depending on where you buy them, some kits come with air mixture screws, and some don't. I got mine from Z1, since it came with the most parts.

The kit I bought for 80 carbs sucked. The needles didn't fit properly they flop around and way to small in diameter compared to the stock.I tossed the kit and went with a Dynojet kit, lesson learned. I have never tried the K&L in the early model carbs but I don't recommend anyone buying the K&L kit for the later model carbs

The big problem with the K&L kits were that they were sold/provided with the WRONG style of pilot jets...see diagram below!!

The style most of the XS's used is on the right, but the XJ uses the style on the left, and it caused all of the XS's to be way too rich in the pilot circuit, couldn't get them to idle right, had poor low end throttle response, blackened plugs, etc.!!

George Fix knows his stuff and provides the right parts!!
