I assume you have the Special model with the fuel valve (octopus) that is mounted to the #2 carb with all the hoses. Most owners just remove it and run lines directly from the petcock's rear outlets down to the carbs. Cap the front outlets. You'll have to remember to shut off your fuel after riding though. If you really want to rebuild it.....

Assuming your bike is a standard you can easly add an off position to your petcocks by following this method: http://www.xs11.com/forum/showthread.php?t=27221

The biggest problem with the rebuild kits for the standard petcocks is it doesnt take them very long to fail, flooding your air box/engine. Also another member documented the piston in the diaphram is 1mm shorter than stock (somone said you can just stretch the spring behind it and problem solved?).

By doing the above mod you can take out the old leaky diaphram toss it away and not worry about having problems with it again!Use gasket maker to seal the two halfs (where the old diaphram was), or just cut a square doughnut out of gasket material to seal it back up. The new "OFF" position will be opposite of "ON".... Wall-ah, no more leaking petcocks or flooded air box...

I don't know why so many people recommend removing the Octy. I like it... If what you have is a Special, and you have the Octy, you can easilly rebuild it with this rebuild kit. I did, and it worked great, with no problems whatsoever.

I took mine off. I just hate battling all the gas lines whenever I need to work on it. Seems like it's hard to find a good way to route the gas lines without em kinking every time I turn around. Besides, it looks cleaner and I can turn off my gas without the octy. Just how I feel about it.
