  • Poop Smear on my Pipes!!

I have just got my Kerker's ceramic coated here in Nashville for $100, with a polished aluminum look, and about a week after putting them on, i have crap caked on them and need help with how to get it off...

I must have put my cover on improperly after getting home from a ride, and the weak flimsy part of the cover was on the headers and melted onto them. (never had an issue while they were chrome) I got about half of the gunk off, and now can't get the rest. i don't want to damage the ceramic coating but the poop smears are messing with my shine!!

    What should I do/use??!!

Is the stuff smeared on there thin? Or is it in globs?

Try this. I use it to remove the melted rubber from my boots on my exhaust by the kick stand.

I've heard of that too and was told to do it when the exhaust is hot.

I have had this issue often on my XS650. Recently, I had to remove melted shoe sole from my chrome pipes.

I use MEK. It is cheap, available, and it works! Use it outside, with the wind at your back, and WEAR PROTECTIVE GLOVES. Do not get MEK on your skin and avoid breathing the vapor.

MEK melts the goo right off!

              Ceramic Coating for 100 bucks?

Where did you get your pipes coated for a $100 bucks? I have a set of header pipes I want to get coated but I know Jet Hot is $175. That would be a hefty savings!!

                Heads up

If you had real ceramic coating on the pipes they would be cooler, not hotter. Looks like someone did a switcharoo. BTW all ceramic paint has a satin look, no gloss to be found.

Did you try Goo Gone? GL

I have a guy that quoted me $100 to ceramic coat my header also. Your best bet is to talk with powder coating places in your area and see if they do ceramic coating. My contact said he has a "chrome" ceramic powder coat but it doesnt shine/gloss like chrome, it looks very close to RODS454’s frame (Post #44 on page 3: http://www.xs11.com/forum/showthread.php?t=26851&page=3 ) which I think looks killer.

                    I will try those suggestions...

Here is the link to the place. Chris is the owner, very nice guy who gave me a deal. He was highly recommended by a powdercoater in town.

So oven cleaner won't hurt the finish of the pipes? Goo Gone was my first thought but I dodn't have any and the stuff is really on there. My main concern was hurting the finish. I think oven cleaner will probably be the only thing that would work, or those other specific products that were listed. I will try them, I may just call over to NitroPlate and see what they recommend.

                    Thanks

A razor blade is all I need to get boot marks off the pipes. Wait until it's cold, and, and it comes right off.

                        Hey Ca,

The coating is good to 1300 degrees, it only took a few hundred to melt the cover. I'd take a lighter or small butane torch to it to heat it up to melting or close, then some soft wood...icecream sticks or such, and scrape it while it's hot and flowing, or even burn it off!?!? JAT!?

I don't think razor blades to a CERAMIC PAINTED coating would be good. Chrome, perhaps, but not your coating!?

                          No to razor blades!

Yea I tried a razor blade and realized it was fairly easy to get into the coating so I stopped.

TopCat, are you saying that with the butane it would get much hotter than it would with the engine at full temp? I ask because it doesn't become moveable at all after a good long run on the interstate....will the high heat of butane hurt it?

I'd call the guy and ask.
Cost nothing to wait a day but could save your pipes from a minor disaster.
I don't know what the ceramic binding agent is but it might not be all that chemical resistant.

Just that a simple match burns at 400 or so, the headers IIRC are about 3-400, but not that hot at the muffler. But as has been said/suggested, a call to the Nitrocoat guys would probably be the best first thing to see what they say.
