    Hi psyco,
that's the definition of "not working" eh?
As I remember it, if you hook up the rheostat style Standard sender to the Special's red warning light the light comes on bright when the tank is full and slowly gets dimmer as the tank empties.
To mount the Special's thermistor style sender in a Standard tank you must put it in backwards (wires pointing forward) or it'll be upside down and the warning light will only come on a 1/2 mile before the reserve sucks dry.

There are also some issues with the petcocks..If you want to use the ones that came with your special, you will have to make up some adaptor plates since the fixing holes do not line up. That's what I did, and it worked out. The petcocks that came with my standard tank were in bad shape and I didn't want to deal with rebuilding them..
Fred is right about the fuel sending unit for the special. You need to mount it so that the thermister thingy-me-bob is higher up in the tank. Put it in wrong and it will act as a "completely-out-of-gas" alarm..

          The sidecar is optional

You gotta salvage the Special's fuel sender to put in the Standard's tank or the red fuel warning light won't work.
Is that your sidecar bike fredintoon? That's sweet, the first pic I ever saw of it. Is that a Volkswagen Rabbit wheel on it?
